You Found Treasure While Metal Detecting- To Clean or Not to Clean

If you are new to metal detecting or have been metal detecting for quite a while than you will know how exciting and enjoyable this hobby can be. One of the most exciting moments in metal detecting is when you actually find something that you feel has some significant value. One thing you should be aware of is that something that has significant value may or may not need to be cleaned.

When you find something that is of value it may be best to appraise its value first before you decide to clean it. To keep the value intact of the treasures that you find, appraise the value and if you feel that the value is significant enough find a form of cleaning it that will not de-value or compromise your finds.

So you may have to question what do I do with my treasures once I find them if I cannot clean them? You certainly can clean your treasures but you need to make sure that you are not devaluing them if your intention is to preserve them and possibly make money off. If you have no interest in gaining monetarily from your metal detecting and clean away, but if you feel that your metal detecting could at some point bring you back some cold hard cash it may be best to have a professional appraiser take a look at your items.

If you decide to clean your items after finding them here are some tips to make sure you do not devalue them. You can use a salt and vinegar solution that gets out stains that you typically have a hard time removing with regular cleaning solution. There are several cleaning solutions out there that you can use today but make sure that you use a mild solution to start out with. When you find coins are made of copper or nickel using a mile solution will typically do the trick of getting them clean.

Although many people involved in metal detecting just for the fun and hobby of it, a good side item of it is if you can possibly find treasure that has value. Always protect your finds and make sure that the items have been appraised. When you had determined that they do not have any monetary value you can clean them and display them any way you like. Items that do have monetary value take extra special care while cleaning them to maintain that value.
