The Difference in Knitting and Crochet

People often confuse knitting and crochet. The majority of the time if someone sees another person crocheting they think they are knitting. The term knitting has been around for centuries so any time people see yarn and hook or needle they think Knitting. But the funny thing is more people know how to crochet than knit.

Knitting is the older of the two crafts. I believe you can find knitting and weaving from almost the beginning of clothes. At the beginning of knitting it was considered a man job. But as time has past it moved to be more often the women. Today there are many greatly talented male designers but the majority of knitters are still women.

Crochet is only really a few centuries old. I believe it came along more as an embellishment for garments than for garments themselves. But as time past and the creative people began to work with hook and yarn beautiful items were created.
Some of the differences between knitting and crochet are:

1 Knitting uses two needles with a pointed end
Crochet uses one hook with a hooked end
2 Knitting main stitches are knit and purl
Crochet main stitches are single crochet and double crochet
3 Knitting has a knit side and a purl side
Crochet has a right side and a wrong side

Each craft uses yarn of some type. Knitting yarn is the same as crocheting yarn. And crochet thread is used for doilies and edgings both in crochet and knit. People use all types of fiber to work with and sometimes they get very creative and crochet with plastic bags and rope. Seldom do you hear of knitting with these items.

Knitting produces a softer and smoother fabric than crochet. Crochet usually produces a chunkier item so you will see crochet if more often than not used for blankets and such. But than again many beautifully designed baby items are crocheted.

With crochet or knit you can work up items from tiny delicate flowers to huge king-size afghans. Bedspreads in crochet thread are just gorgeous but very time consuming. A delicate knitted christening gown is a wonderful heirloom to treasure and pass on. You can crochet or knit warm winter hats, cozy slippers, and shawls to keep the chill out or lacy vest to complete an outfit.

Yes with needle, hook and yarn or thread you can create and make wonderful gifts for all. This is one hobby that can be as inexpensive or expensive as your budget allows. Crochet or knit are each crafts well worth learning and passing on to the next generation.

It is interesting to know 80 percent of knitters also know how to crochet. But only about 30 percent of crocheters know how to knit.
