There are actually three types of RC cars to choose from. Besides electric and Nitro. There is another that is known as the petrol. But by far the two most popular Rc cars are electric and Nitro. I’ll discuss the difference between the two so you can choose which one is the best for you.
The biggest difference is the way they perform. Both are extremely fast and handle exceptionally well. But Nitro models usually take the cup in overall speed. They are pushed by a two-stroke engine, which believe it or not have reached speeds up to 200 mph. But of course, 75 miles an hour is the high average, and 40 miles an hour is a very fast car.
Electric RC cars have recently acquired a new technology of brushless motors and high-performance batteries. Since this new development, some of these brushless wonders have reached speeds of over 60 mph, with the quick punch of a DC motor. Now don’t think for a minute that just because the Nitro’s have a slight edge in performance, that these DC vehicles won’t make your socks roll up and down with excitement, because they certainly will. And if they’re standing on a gravel road when you suddenly punch the go button. I hope you’re wearing safety glasses, because you might need them.
The big difference between the two is that the Nitro engines take much more care than the electrical, and they usually appeal more to the RC car enthusiasts. They’re much more like a real car because you get the exciting noise from the combustion engine, and you must carry fuel and an oil can along for the suspension of. But each refueling is usually good for about an hour of hard-core race action. And when it runs out of fuel, you give it more and start racing again. Whereas the electric cars are usually good for about 10 to 20 minutes, then you must stop and charge them again for 20 minutes or have another set of batteries on hand which take 45 minutes to charge.
A lot of these Nitro and electric vehicles are virtually indestructible. I’ve seen him fly in the air over 40 feet, land straight down and keep going. The new controls, suspension parts and technology, make them extremely durable and an easier to control than years ago.
So from my perspective of racing vehicles for over 14 years, my thoughts are that it’s usually the RC car enthusiasts that prefer the Nitro cars. Because they’re more exciting, they drive for much longer durations, and they operate more like a real vehicle. But they definitely take more work, you must constantly tinker and adjust them, the fuel stinks and seems to get on everything because of the oil mixture. So if you consider buying one of these it takes an extra commitment with all the extra responsibilities that go with it.
And electric cars are safer because there’s no fuel, they’re easier to deal with is you don’t have to take such a big toolbox with you. They’re definitely the first choice for beginners or young children because of their ease of use, and higher regard for safety with no fuel. With the advent of the new brushless high-performance motors, their performances is almost equal to the Nitro vehicles. So if you want something that’s easy, and you don’t have to get your hands to dirty the electric one might be your choice And lastly the electric vehicles are much less expensive to purchase and to operate.
When I was a kid they were flying radio controlled airplanes in a field near my house, I recommend you call your local RC car shop and find out where they are flying a racing their toys, so you can go out and mingle with the people and get a better feel for the one you’d be happiest with.

What electronics do i need for a RC boat?

i built a wooden sailboat, but i want to rig it with a rudder and a motor… just in case there is no wind… and so i can steer. i know that i need a waterproof servo and motor, but i dont know what types, or what i need to connect them all so they work. i also dont know what type of receiver to get. i would appreciate some suggestions or sites that explain it all, thanks.
thanks for the futaba site, but it doesnt seem like they have any waterproof electronics

Answer
You need to make an area in the boat that is water proof for the receiver, battery etc. to go. There are water resistant servos but I mounted all in the waterproof area and used wire push/pull rods through boots – you can buy these from good hobby shops. The point is not to make a box that can sit 15 feet below the surface but that will resist enough for splashing and possible surface immersion should the boat turtle itself. You should always have enough floatation to keep the model floating fully swamped.

Any good brand of RC gear is fine, Sanwa, JR, Futaba, Multiplex etc. – just a simple Sanwa Dash 2 channel will work fine and is very cheap. I only use rechargeable batteries but dry cells work for quite some time. For propulsion you could fit a small hobby electric outboard that turns on when lowered and off when lifted. If you want to control your sails, steer and operate a motor then a 2 channel unit will not be enough – the costs go up significantly then as four channel type RC systems are at least twice the price of the basic units.
